We've reached 45% on Rotten Tomatoes for our How Low Can We Go series and it brings us the divisive movie The Strangers.

Featuring actual adults, actual suspense, real scares and a daring deviation from horror norms, we argue that The Strangers deserves a better rating than this.

Next in our 'How Low Can We Go?' series is Pet Sematary, the legendary late 80's film that scarred and charmed a generation.

This movie deserved better than it got from film critics, whose hearts are stonier. Sometimes movies are better... than their ratings suggest.

1) All in all, Carrie 2013 is obviously not better than the original

2) The studio interferences did this movie NO favors

3) Carrie 2013 is still waaay better than its reputation indicates

4) The secondary cast is surprisingly good

Inspired by a great article on i-D called "How Horror Became Cinema's Smartest Genre", we wanted to take a deep dive on the topic and talk about some of our favorite examples how the horror genre was/is cutting edge, fiercely smart and innovative, and takes on issues other genres may not be comfortable speaking to.

Jon Padgett's The Secret of Ventriloquism, named the Best Horror Fiction Book of 2016 by Rue Morgue Magazine, heralds the arrival of a significant new literary talent. With themes reminiscent of Shirley Jackson, Thomas Ligotti, and Bruno Schulz, but with a strikingly unique vision, Padgett's work explores the mystery of human suffering, the agony of personal existence, and the ghastly means by which someone might achieve salvation from both.

Halloweekly sits down with this incredibly talented author to find out where his ideas come from, what scares him, and how he feels about the state of the horror genre circa 2017.
